summary:
Junior talks about his brain damage and how he gets made fun of and how poor he is. His dad shot his dog (bestfriend) because it was so sick, he put it out of his misery. Then he intoduces us to his real best friend(human) Rowdy, acorrding to Junior he is the toughest kid on the rez. Junior starts high school and throws a book at his teacher and it hit's him right on the face and breaks his nose and because of this he gets suspended. His teacher gives him advice to leave the reservation so he can find hope. When he tells Rowdy the news that he was transfering schools, Rowdy punches him and thinks he is a "white lover".

Chapters 8-15
Summary:
Junior starts school at Reardan, and meets a very pretty girl named Penelope. Later that day Junior explains the "Unofficial and Unwritten Spokane Indian Rules of Fisticuffs" (pgs. 61-62). Junior then explains that a white boy named Roger made a very racist joke about all Indians in general, so Junior punched him in the face, but Roger didn't fight back. After that day at school, Junior goes to his grandmother's house to tell her about the fight and how Roger didn't fight back which she thought was very wierd. The next morning Junior's dad doesn't have enough gas to take him to school so he gets a ride from his dad's bestfriend Eugene on his motorcycle. Junior starts thinking about this girl he used to love named Dawn, and decides to try and talk to Rowdy about it, but Rowdy doesn't care and makes Junior cry. Penelope and Junior end up both dressing up as homeless people for Halloween. Penelope tells Junior that she is collecting money to help the homeless. Junior lies and tells Penelope that he is supposed to be a homeless Indian, and that he is trying to collect money for homeless Indians. After Junior is done trick-or-treating, he has collected about $10.00 and has to walk home in the dark. Out of nowhere, three Indians jump Junior on his way home and take all the money he collected as well as his candy. The three Indian boys then beat up Junior for being a "traitor" and a "white lover". Even though Junior didn't have any money to give Penelope, she still put his name on the box of money that she collected. Junior had to walk home that day and when he got home he finds his mom crying and she tells him his sister ran away and got married. Finally, Junior gets an email from his sister about how great Montana is, and how she misses him but is having an amazing time.

Junior takes Penelope to a school dance and they go out to get waffles after, but then all of his friends discover that he is poor. His sister sends him a letter telling him that she is planning on writing a book about her life story. Junior gets on the varsity basketball team at his school as a freshman. During Christmas, Junior's dad leaves home and gets drunk because he feels so poor, but he keeps five dollars and gives it to Junior as a Christmas present. The Reardan basketball team has its first game against Wellpinit, but all the Indians at Wellpinit shun Junior when he walks in. One person throws a quarter at Junior, causing him to have to get stitches and not be able to play. Once Junior gets back in the game he gets knocked out and the whole gym turns into a giant fight. Junior has to go to the hospital, but his coach comes to keep him company. Not soon after Junior's grandmother dies when she gets hit by a drunk driver.

Chapters 23-26
Eugene, Junior's dad's friend, was shot in the face. Juniors teacher Mrs.Jeremy picks on him beause he's missed a month of school. All of his classmates stand up for him and leave the classroom. Junior's basketball team plays against Wellpint and Junior is assigned to guard Rowdy. Rowdy went for a slam dunk and Junior grabbed the ball out of his hands. He then scored the first 3 points of the game and led the team to a crushing victory. He then became upset with himself when he realized the odds weren't fair. Many of the Indians had alcoholic parents or didn't eat breakfast, and none of them were going to college. Junior emails Rowdy to apologize, and Rowdy actually emails him back.
